Brocatelle. Fabric characterised by the effects of raised work on a flat, shiny and bright ground. The ornamentation is a typical fabric of the Baroque period, in which elegant winding shapes, rich materials, intense contrasts of light and shade abound. The decoration is formed by curved branches crowned by flowers, in particular rich tulips, hence the name Semper Augustus - a famous tulip which references the craze for tulips which exploded in Holland in the first half of the seventeenth century.
